NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani Talks Fixing NYC, Building Public Trust and 9/11 in Exclusive Interview with The Ebro, Laura & Rosenberg Show

 

The Ebro, Laura & Rosenberg Show, hosted by Ebro Darden, Laura Stylez and Peter Rosenberg, sat down with New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani for an exclusive conversation about his first six months in office, the challenges facing New Yorkers and his vision for the city. 

 

Known for bringing hip hop, politics and culture into the same conversation, the trio opened the interview by recognizing Mamdani’s transparency on social media and his willingness to communicate directly with New Yorkers about the work happening across the city.

 

Laura Stylez praised the mayor’s team for using social media to show New Yorkers what is happening on the ground, from addressing potholes and infrastructure concerns to larger initiatives involving the Van Wyck Expressway and free child care.

 

Mamdani said maintaining the public’s faith in government is central to his approach to leadership. He compared the responsibility of governing to maintaining a lead in a soccer match. If the city believes his administration is off to a strong start, he said, the goal cannot simply be to “protect the lead.” Instead, his administration must continue pushing forward, taking risks, acknowledging mistakes and delivering for New Yorkers.

 

That commitment to accountability became a central theme of the conversation.

 

Ebro asked Mamdani what he believes could have gone better during his first six months as mayor. Mamdani reflected on the intensity of the job and the importance of continually challenging himself as the demands of the position come in waves.

 

Rosenberg then asked about Mamdani’s first major "holy shit" moment as mayor. The mayor recalled responding to two fires as well as navigating his first major snowstorm in office. The conversation turned to the changing nature of extreme weather in New York City, with Mamdani noting that climate change is forcing the city to rethink how it prepares for and responds to major snow events.

 

With the 25th anniversary of September 11 approaching, Rosenberg also asked Mamdani what the anniversary means to him as mayor of New York City.

 

Mamdani emphasized that the anniversary is first and foremost a time to grieve and remember the families whose lives were permanently changed by the attacks. He reflected on visiting New York City firehouses and seeing plaques honoring off duty firefighters who returned to duty and worked to help their fellow New Yorkers in the aftermath.

 

The hosts also shared their own memories of September 11. Ebro recalled being on the air in Portland, Oregon, when the attacks happened and trying to make sense of the unfolding events. Laura shared her memories of returning home and struggling to process what had happened as she cried.

 

Mamdani reiterated that his focus on the anniversary is on honoring the people who went above and beyond to protect New York City, while remembering the families and communities forever impacted by that day.

 

The conversation offered a candid look at the responsibilities of leading New York City, the challenges facing the administration and the personal significance of serving a city shaped by both its history and its ability to move forward.
