Who is Young Jay? James Middleton aka “Young Jay” was born on October 28th, 1993 in St. Helena, SC. It was at an early age that James fell in love with music as he grew up listening to the likes of: Lil Wayne, Jay-Z, Biggie, Gucci, Fabolous and a few other notable rappers. These artists helped James develop his love for music and were the building blocks to him transitioning from “James Middleton” to “Young Jay”. As Jay matured he started writing rhymes and working on his craft as music became an intricate part of his life. The more Jay worked at becoming a great rapper/songwriter, the more he realized that he had a gift and music was his purpose in life. Jay’s mindset became: “Plan A become a rapper, Plan B make Plan A work!” As growing up in a “Gullah Geechee” town in South Carolina Jay refused to become another statistic and strived to rise above his immediate circumstances. Failure is not an option and motivates him to be the best. The early makings of “Young Jay” were now in progress and the “Geechee” emcee is ready to leave his imprint in the music game.
While most rappers try to mimic the “Atlanta Style” of rap, Young Jay is all about embracing his “Gullah Geechee” culture and dialect. Jay says: “I really rap for real, I’m speaking for the dirt road, I want to be the voice of the low country and my goal is to bring real rap back to the forefront!” This attitude along with his life, his surroundings and the people that are closest to him is what his music/sound is about. Jay is really about putting on for his city and being the voice of the low country. All he wants to do is win and put his people in positions to win. This way if everyone in his immediate circle are millionaires then they wouldn’t have to resort to street life to make money. Young Jay wants to give his city hope and use his newly found platform to lead the youth of Geechee town in the right direction. Jay looks to accomplish this as he releases his 1st project “Geechie Gospel” and use the pen to spread his gospel to his congregation, the hip-hop nation.
