Illinois rapper Sciryl (‘lyrics’ spelled backwards) Da Ghost presents “Stupid Rich”, the new single from High Risk High Reward 2, his forthcoming mixtape featuring guest appearances from Slim Brown and Dose as well as production from French producer Mudabwoy. Hailing from a musical family, Sciryl’s father is a blues musician, and his brother is producer A-Foe, who produced “Stupid Rich”. “Music is my passion,” Sciryl says. “It’s part of my everyday life just like my family is. The three things that are on my mind when I wake up every morning is money, my family, and my music.” The first volume of High Risk High Reward was released in 2014 (listen on Datpiff). “I wrote ‘Stupid Rich’ when I was trying to stay motivated and focused on my goals,” Sciryl says. “While a lot of my friends were kicking it and partying, I was workin on my dreams of becoming successful.”
What inspired “Stupid Rich”?
"Stupid Rich" was created to keep myself motivated on my goals and dreams. Sometimes it's hard to stay focused because of all the worldly distractions we have to deal with on a day-to-day basis. That's why in the hook I said "stay focused and remember why you doin this".
Why did you name your mixtape High Risk High Reward?
High Risk High Reward resonates with my lifestyle and my approach to everyday life. From a music and a business standpoint, you gotta make calculated decisions to be successful. A lot of times these decisions are risky. And most of the time the higher the risk, the higher the reward. This concept even applies to high school graduates who decide to go to college. It's not guaranteed that they will get a great job with a degree so it's a risk.
Sciryl is Lyrics backwards. Why do you call yourself The Ghost?
Ghost was a nickname givin to me by my peers in high school. Because my complexion is light or sometimes "clear" in the winter, people started calling me Ghost. This came about from cracking jokes on each other at school.
What’s your favorite rap album of all time and why?
Man this is a tough question, but imma have to go with Dr. Dre's "The Chronic". It's actually the first cassette I listened to front back to front. It was one of my older brothers and when I heard it it kinda changed my life. The production, the melodies, and the subject matter were so powerful.
Do you think there’s a noticeable difference in rap style between Illinois and the rest of the country? Can you describe it?
There are different styles of rap within Illinois. This is the main difference between Illinois and the rest of the country. You got the drill sound of King Louie and G Herbo. And you got the new music of Chance which is phenomenal. We have a variety of music.
