Despite London being hailed as the ‘home of grime’, MCs and producers
from outside the capital are moving in close to steal the crown and it seems
that Birmingham, Manchester, Nottingham and Sheffield are the cities that
everyone has their eyes on.
Shinobi, born and bred in Sheffield, and a veteran in the northern
underground music scene, represents the Steel City and is the latest emcee to
stand up and be counted with his brand new track 'Like I Do'.
Co-founder of A.O.K (All Out Krew) and also the online Sheffield based
radio station ‘UK Mondo’, Shinobi is an exceptionally dedicated contributor to
the scene. Recently celebrating success with the Sheffield hip-hop collective
Clubs & Spades, made up of fellow MC Matic Mouth and producers Andy
Nicholson and Jamie Shield, their track ‘Clearer Coast’ was made Record of the
Week by Charlie Sloth on BBC Radio 1Xtra, Record of the Day online and hit
radio playlists throughout the UK. Proving the extent to which he is a master
of reinvention, Shinobi is venturing solo in his brand new release, ‘Like I
Do’, featuring upcoming Sheffield MC LDizz.'
The track sees Shinobi
spitting bars over a merky Sticky Blood instrumental that draws on the early
days of grime, made up of a racing backline and jerking synth fuelled beat. Shinobi’s
confident bars match his effortless delivery and LDizz slaps down an energetic
verse that collides with Shinobi’s, resulting in you screw facing and head
bopping along. The video, shot in black and white, is set against a city
backdrop, matching the back-to-basics, raw vibe of the track. Expect to hear
more from Shinobi over what is going to be a great year for grime in the Steel
City.
