What was the inspiration for your new single “Most Entertamed”?
I'm hesitant to answer because I personally love using my imagination to interpret meaning and motivation behind songs I dig, instead of hearing the artist spell it out for me like "this song is about..." But in all honesty, the inspiration for that track was the 2006 movie Idiocracy. The original draft of the beat was even more electronic than the final, and I was going to try and write a ironic EDM track and make fun of club life and pop culture. It was supposed to be funny. I was gonna rap like someone from that movie and the song sort of just morphed into what it is during the recording process. Beats me how, but I dug it, and the bars were ill, so it works.
How has the response been to Iconoclast?
The response has been great so far. If it was bad, I'd probably still say it's been great, but I digress. For real though, it's definitely the most successful and well-received project I've put out to date. I have to give all the credit in the world to Mammyth on that. He made the album sound like a monster, and people's response has confirmed that. I plan to do maybe two more videos for Iconoclast before some new releases get tied up.
Your lyrics employ a lot of sarcasm. What do you think are the pros and cons of that?
It's funny because I have no sense of interpreting other people's sarcasm in real life. I think the pros are the obvious, it leads to funny shit being said. I don't consider myself a punchline rapper, but I have been known to throw a zinger from time to time. I'm sure the only reason I can't think of a con is because I make my stuff selfishly and I know what I like to hear. So I guess a con would be that if you're a fan of personality, then the sarcasm can kind of make it hard for you to know when I'm being serious, or what things I actually mean, but there's tons of straightforward "when I was 9 i lived here, when I was 10 my mom worked there" rap out that's dope for heads to check out. That's just not what I'm really doing.
Are you working on a new album?
Yep, a couple. I have a concept album coming out with Miggs called Happy Thoughts. We're doing a comic book that goes along with it, which should be fly. I'm doing two little EPs respectively with Savannah producers Smash Adams and Black Ceasar, both of whom I've worked with mad times. And the next big solo album is called 1984. I'm in the early stages of that one right now. But I plan on releasing all of that stuff this year. I don't know how, but that's the plan.
What’s your favorite non-rap album of all time and why?
Nine Inch Nails, Downward Spiral. I was a kid, I had gone through a spell of getting super-heavy into comic books and not giving a shit about music of any kind for like three years. And a kid at school let me borrow this CD with all these liner notes and song lyrics and art. I just immersed myself with it for months. Made me get into music again - not making, but listening.
