Bay Area hip-hop artist Jwalt releases his highly anticipated debut album Yours Truly. The 11-track album is produced by renowned producer, DJ, drummer, and member of the underground hip-hop collective Hieroglyphics, DJ Touré. Yours Truly is also executive produced by media maven and SiriusXM radio host Sway Calloway.
Yours Truly gives listeners insight into who Jwalt is. The 18-year-old MC gained national attention when he became the youngest participant in the Sway’s Universe Doomsday Cypher in 2017. J rocked the stage with notable rappers like Quincey White, ANoyd, FVRTHR, and Pro Era’s Nyck Caution. His lyrical aptitude was obvious then, and with Yours Truly. Each track covers engaging topics such as mental health, family, relationships, and coming of age in the entertainment industry.
The beloved rapper, songwriter, poet described by Mistah F.A.B. as the "the next Bay Area artist to break” is strategic with the format of Yours Truly. Each song tells a story and highlights aspects of Jwalt’s personal life. “There are songs you can vibe, study, exercise, or turn up to,” he says. The album’s lead single, “THE KID” was selected by ESPN for NBA Countdown to be played nationally in between games, commercials, and recaps in early 2019. Anticipation for Yours Truly intensified when Jwalt released his second single, “Where You Been”. The track illustrated the depths of his introspection and poetic sensibility. It also became the intro song of his mini-documentary entitled, A Day with Yours Truly which highlights Jwalt’s monumental performance at the Oakland Arena with rap icons the Wu-Tang Clan, Nas, Dave East, and Too Short.
Sway in the Morning host and executive producer Sway Calloway says, “Jwalt is fresh and powerful blended together. The bay has a new wave happening and he’s a big part of it.”
Many other respected voices within the music industry have recognized Jwalt’s potential. Award-winning hip-hop artists Logic and G-Eazy quickly became mentors to the buzzing MC after hearing his music. He also established relationships with Grammy-nominated producer Max Perry (Wiz Khalifa, Cam’Ron) and CT Beats (Drake, YG). His charisma is infectious and shines bright throughout the album. As confident and charismatic as he is in the studio, Jwalt exudes the same qualities on stage. He performed with rap scholars Talib Kweli and Black Thought at the 7th annual Hiero Day Music Festival and the inaugural Sway Festival with G-Eazy, Kamaiyah, Sheila E., Rexx Life Raj, and Mistah F.A.B. Jwalt was even selected to perform for Stephen Curry at the Fox Theater in Oakland, California with fellow Bay Area natives E-40 and Saweetie.
Yours Truly is a culmination of Jwalt’s commitment to the art of rap. All eleven tracks are passionate testimonies of devotion. Known for his verbal onslaughts in the Friday Fire Cypher, Bedroom Bars, and ‘Best of Thizzler’ Cypher, Jwalt’s “pure hip-hop” style reigns supreme on tracks like “School Freestyle (Tribute to Nip),” “Fade Away,” and “Elevate.” “Yours Truly is very lyrical and for people of all ages.” He shows his range with songs like “Girl Of My Dreams” featuring Richie and “Jwalt” which might be a crowd favorite. Outspoken about issues related to mental health “Interlude 2 - ANXIETY” digs deep into his struggles with the disorder. Jwalt’s panel discussion with Academy Award-winning rapper/actor Common inspired the track. The poignant lyrical content in Yours Truly sets Jwalt apart from his peers. From beginning to end he illustrates why he could potentially lead hip-hop’s next generation of MCs.
