HipHopOnDeck.com's Own Miss Radcliffe Interviews
Uk Hip Hop Artist BigCakes
Miss R: Who is Big Cakes?
UK Hip Hop veteran artist, 7 albums deep, yet to peak, with a lot more to come. Positive music activist
Miss R: 3 words friends or family would use to describe you best?
1. Comedian 2. Serious (too) 3. Caring
Miss R: At what age did you decide to pursue music?
At around 17 I started thinking I wanted to do music as a career instead of looking at a more conventional option. My parents are big on school, so for the most part, from college, it felt like I was just studying to complete the education process and make them happy. My mum would actually say when I'd graduate she'd leave me alone then I could do music with her blessing. I'm eternally grateful for all of that.

Miss R: Do you remember the first lyric you wrote?
Nah, some of my very very early ones and probably a couple of the first few I exhibited in the school playground, so if I said I do, confidently I might be lying so, No.
Miss R: Who were your influences growing up?
Family and friends.
Musically: East coast and West coast hip hop and RnB music. Infamous local gangsters and hood celebrities and stuff like that. just life generally.

Miss R: Has there ever been a verse you wished you wrote?
Many. furthermore, there's verse I've heard and been like...I swear if I was sitting in the right chair on the right day that is more or less how I would have written the verse and expanded on the concept.
Off the top of my head, I can't think of one right now but that happens.

Miss R: What (in your experience) is the worst and best thing about the music industry?
The best thing about the music industry is how much independent artists could potentially earn to support themselves and their families. The worst thing, there’s a lot of bullshit to be honest, which comes with the territory but I’m really trying to be grateful for the good, the bad and the ugly.. if u don’t love music in this scene it’s easy to drop out of it.

Miss R; Tell us about your new project 'No Excuses' (out now via bandcamp)
What was the inspiration behind the making of this?
It was the follow up to the last album No Expiry, see there's more to come, like No Expenses.. Life is my main inspiration, in the sense that I'm inspired by what I see and what I'm going through and my personal take on it.

Miss R: This is your 7th studio album, so you've been here for a minute. Where can your new fans get you back catalogue?
My whole official catalogue is on iTunes, Amazon, etc etc.. they can buy all that plus my mixtapes from my bandcamp site http://bigcakes.bandcamp.com and CDs/merch from http://bigcakes.bigcartel.com
Miss R: Looking back from when you first started to now, how have you developed as a artist?
I've grown up. Got more mature. Lightened up a little. More willing to experiment and collaborate. At the same time, I feel like I've become a lot sharper and better as an artist, but that comes with experience.
Miss R: Apart from music, what other creative avenues would you like to explore?
I would love to try my hand at acting. I would like to do little roles to start with, something serious though, or maybe not so intense like an appearance on a soap as a temporary character. Something I could use to get used to the environment, the camera, equipment and industry.
I would also like write and direct short movies and/or TV comedy series. I would love that
