Hip Hop On Deck Interviews J Cutta | @datsJCutta

Atlanta rapper/producer J Cutta presents “Summer Of Sam”, his new single produced by Lil Wayne producer Blasian Beats. J’s last album was Life, Lies & Luxury (stream on Bandcamp), which spawned the single “Livin” (watch the music video). J has produced for the Youngbloodz, the Dungeon Family (click here to hear “Fall Back”), has opened for Soulja Boy and has been featured on mixtapes with DJ Scream and DJ Teknikz. The idea and the creation of the song came from good vibes in the studio,” J says of the new single. “I wrote a few different hooks for this track and this one just stuck. It has the chant and anthem feel. It’s that gym work it and blast music in the car on the way to the club type of song. I ran the track back a few times and felt like it jelled together.”

How did you get your stage name?

I've had the name since 9th grade. My friends starting calling me Cutta after I took out my braids and cut my Afro. Before that they were calling me carpet head very few still do. But it was when I was growing my hair out and things started looking real rough for me and my hair. My African roots started to show during that process. The ladies seemed to like calling me Cutta (Cut-her)for the most from what i could tell.

What made you decide to become a rapper?

Music and the ability to create it has been with me since I was in elementary school. I was in choir and I performed in school plays. I just wanted to be on stage so at the time I did anything to be. I've been a fan of rap music, RnB, and other genres since I was little. I was always inspired by stories rap music tells and the fun they have in the videos. I also really connect with the track and the different sounds that came from them. In middle school I write poems and I was also in a class for it to learn more ways to write them. I felt like I've always been a writer in one form or another. There is much more to it but we can leave it at that for now.

What’s the first rap song you ever heard? Describe the moment.

The first one I really remember hearing that actually made me want to put the song on repeat was Nas - If I Ruled The World. I was at home and I think I heard it on radio, also noticed my brother bought the Cd that week. So I would take his Cd and go listen to that song over and over again. I also remember sneaking off and listening to Snoop Dogg "Murder Was The Case" I had to be in like the 1st grade. so I didn't understand everything that was said but I listen to it and loved the different beats on that record.

How did “Summer Of Sam” come together?

The idea and the creation of the song came from good vibes in the studio. I wrote a few different hooks for this track and this one just stuck with. It has the chant and anthem feel. It's that gym work it and blast music in the car on the way to the club type of song. I ran the track back a few times and felt like it jelled together.

What are your predictions for the presidential race?

To be honest, I expecting to see Clinton in office. She been plotting and planning this campaign for years. The super delegates are a dead giveaway, though Bernie despises it. I am very surprised Trump has made it this far after everything that has come out his mouth up until this point. But I am hoping it is doesn't go in his favor for America's sake. But don’t want to get to political lol.
