At 13 years old, Young Swiper's lyrical ability and personality is well polished; beyond his years in fact. A bright spot in the future of Hip Hop this young brother has putting together a dope campaign to get the whole world familiar with himself and the Trendsettazz brand which he represents. Very active on social media and a comprehensive catalog to date, his promise is intriguing and hopefully comes to fruition. We sat down with the rising star for an exclusive interview about his name, the music, and his accomplishments thus far. Check it out:
Hip Hop On Deck: Let’s started with your name, is there any special significance?
Young Swiper: My name is special I got it from my little sister, and I put Young in front of it since I was only 12 years old.
Hip Hop On Deck: We see you are a native of South Carolina, then spent time in Harlem before your family settled in Delaware? Do you have memories of all these places, share some with us.
Young Swiper: I am originally from South Carolina, my mom lost custody. It got crazy in foster care being away from my mom and sister. Dealing with not having my dad around, because he was incarcerated. That was rough for me. My dad is a Harlem cat. He came down from New York to come get me in South Carolina. That is how I ended up in Harlem. My first time in Harlem it was a whole different atmosphere; faster pace, a lotta swag, they some hustlers out there. Now I'm In Delaware I just be chilling, hanging with my Trend Settaz family and a couple of good people from Delaware that have been supporting me from Day 1.
Hip Hop On Deck: So Delaware is your home, tell us about the life of a teenager in Delaware?
Young Swiper: Life as a teenager in Delaware is fun; I'm doing things that I wasn't able to do as a little kid. Shout out to my school Kirk Middle they hold me down and support me heavy.
Hip Hop Deck: Are you into any sports?
Young Swiper: Yea, I play basketball; Steph Curry with the shot …. (laughs).
Hip Hop On Deck: How did you fall in love with Music - specifically Hip Hop?
Young Swiper: I used to think I could sing. I used to listen to soul music. The first rap video I saw was Lil Wayne Lollipop. He was standing on top of the truck playing the guitar, he was very lyrical and I wanted to be just like that; or even better.
Hip Hop On Deck: Who would you say is the biggest influence on your ambitions as an MC?
Young Swiper: Drake, Drizzy Drake, he’s different then a lot of rappers. I could see him in the game for a long time. I wouldn't call him a rapper; I would say he is a lyricist.
Hip Hop On Deck: I've heard some of the music, and it is really good. I would say you are ahead of your time. But it does make me wonder, do you get help with the writing?
Young Swiper: That's a no, 100% no.
Hip Hop On Deck: Your team has released Drill Time your diss for Slim Jesus. What was it about his record that made you want to do a diss track?
Young Swiper: I just don't feel like it’s him. I don't feel like he is authentic. Every line he had in that song had no substance.
Hip Hop On Deck: I respect the fact that you didn't say anything inappropriate. How is your parent’s reaction to the music that you make?
Young Swiper: My parents are very supportive of what I do when I do something they expect me to give it my all. They have high expectations of me.
Hip Hop On Deck: You recently came up to the city for the Underground Music Awards, how was that experience ?
Young Swiper: It was a great experience being back stage, meeting Rah Digga, getting a chance to hear her rap. Doing interviews. Me and my lil bro Freddie Fresh turned up on stage with our performance and got the crowd off their feet.
Hip Hop On Deck: What’s next for Young Swiper ?
Young Swiper: I got this new song it’s called Drop Dance it’s a song for any and everybody. Very energetic, right after we drop the song we are going to drop the video to show y’all how to drop dance.
