HipHopOnDeck Interviews MJT / www.hiphopondeck.com
Central Islip, NY group MJT presents “One Way”, their first single from their forthcoming EP Hour Glass. Formerly known as the Michael Jazz Trio, twenty-year old bassist Matthew Godfrey, eighteen-year-old vocalist/multi-instrumentalist David Godfrey and fourteen-year-old drummer Jo Jo Godfrey blend funk and r&b with a jazz foundation, have multiple wins at Harlem’s Apollo Theatre under their belts, and have performed on the Jazz on the Vine Series (watch MJT perform live<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ey0SkWEYjlQ). “It’s about the way I view life,” David says of the new record. “It’s about how easy it is to lose yourself in any industry or job. I wrote how I felt at the moment and off personal experiences.”

When did you decide you wanted to take it seriously?

For me, I didn't start taking it seriously until we had been playing professionally for a while. Performing went from being a hobby to a career somewhat overnight. It was kind of like that light bulb moment when I thought "Hey, I really love playing music". Also this was around the time I picked up the guitar because, until that point, I was mostly playing saxophone and sometimes bass guitar. But when I picked up a lead guitar it really all just clicked.

How did you guys get into music?

Music has kind of always been there. We've been playing music, whether it was serious or nonsense, for as long as I can remember. Even going back before Jordan was born, there are pictures of Matt and I playing toy keyboards and first act drum sets and stuff. I guess music is just what we were meant to do because I literally don't remember a time when there weren't instruments around.

What’s it like being in a band of brothers?

There is just a connection with someone you've spent your whole life with that's hard to find in any other situation. I generally know where they're gonna take take a song before they even take it there and vice versa. Also we live in the same house which sometimes makes practice easier, but not all the time. Honestly though, if you enjoy playing with the guys you’re playing with, it comes across in the music regardless if you’re siblings or just some boys you found on the street. And the same goes if you don't enjoy it. Luckily, we love playing together.

What was the inspiration for “One Way”?

When I wrote "One Way" I was 18 and was coming to a realization of what life was all about. I feel like it’s what most people go through when you reach about college age. I think that some people get to this age and just do what they’re expected to do: go to college so they can get a good job and live well off, or try to find a good job without college.  I think too many times people put too much stock in expectation instead of what their dreams really are. This song is my personal experience with that and also the battle you have with yourself when you’re not content with just settling.

Tell us about your upcoming EP.

Our new EP Hour Glass has an alt-rock base but also some fusion sounds to it. The lyrics are mainly about growing up and discovering yourself and life. It's also our first project after we transitioned over to rock music which was exciting for us. We're stoked to release this EP and unveil our new sound. We also did a Foo Fighters cover of "My Hero" which is a song we really enjoy playing. We really hope people enjoy this because we had a great time putting it together.
