Bay Area group Cardboard People has unveiled their new single, "Falling Awake", and announced their upcoming concept album, "Tigress Lane", set for release on October 25. The album features collaborations with Del the Funky Homosapien, Caitlin Cobb-Vialet, and Ellie Stokes.
"Falling Awake" continues the themes from the album’s previous track, "Outkast," exploring issues of ego, pride, and the folly of repeating the same mistakes. The song reflects the balancing act between career ambitions and personal growth.
"Tigress Lane" is a testament to Cardboard People’s experimental and diverse approach to music. The album showcases the raw talent and soulful songwriting of Jim Greer (he/him) and Yunoka Berry (she/they), with contributions from Sam Lasko (ManorOfAnimals), who co-produced and co-wrote several tracks. Their creative journey, including a songwriting retreat to Jamaica in early 2024, has resulted in an album that is both innovative and authentically theirs.
The album draws inspiration from Berry’s and Greer’s experiences on a street in Jamaica named Tigress Lane. Berry, though not of Jamaican descent, finds a deep connection through her family's respect for Jamaican culture. For Greer, the street represents the culmination of a decade of recurring dreams and the search for an ideal musical partnership.
The journey to Tigress Lane, marked by chance encounters with places from Greer’s dreams, has fueled the duo’s creative synergy. The album embodies their vulnerability and camaraderie, aiming to push boundaries rather than conform to commercial expectations.
"This album represents a more cohesive effort compared to our debut", said Berry. "We’ve grown musically and discovered our commonalities. Our goal is to provoke thought, challenge conventions, and deliver exceptional music".
Greer added, "While our self-titled debut introduced us, "Tigress Lane" shows we’ve arrived at something significant. We meticulously curated the songs to highlight Yunoka’s voice and my production and writing skills, with contributions from friends and family".
The album also features a storyline where each song represents a different planet.
Cardboard People will bring their dynamic live performance to the Bay Area, with dates including:

Founded in 2020 by Chicago native Yunoka Berry and Bay Area producer Jim Greer, Cardboard People has garnered attention for their high-energy performances and eclectic pop sound.
