THE SMUGGLERS CANDLE LP OUT ON AUGUST 26th
New music video for "It’s Easy" from turntablist / producer, DJ Criminal has dropped this morning. First posted by Insomniac Magazine the track features verses from Barfly and the video features extensive footage filmed in Nepal (Criminal calls Southeast Asia home).
This is the first leak from the forthcoming LP The Smuggler’s Candle. To drop digitally on August 26th the album is Criminal’s most ambitious and varied work to date. In addition to a myriad of musical textures (which includes several instrumental tracks rife with transitions, scratches and samples) Criminal acts as curator for an underground hip-hop wish list of collaborators.

Some of these collaborators include Slug (Atmosphere), Blueprint, Illogic, A-F-R-O, Akil The MC (Jurassic 5), Barfly and vocalist Jennifer Charles (who hasn’t appeared on a hip-hop project since her star turn on Dan The Automator and Mike Patton’s Lovage album).
Also expect several interludes from international crime journalist Sean Williams who succinctly sums up the project as "this isn’t just music to smuggle to. It’s music that’s been smuggled". Indeed the majority of the album was created using vinyl he obtained and smuggled during digging excavations in Afghanistan, Thailand and other Asian countries (using a specially made afghan vest pictured below).
Thirteen tracks deep the project is as exotic as the sound sources culled for the tracks and is a worldwide trip through uniquely created elements of boom-bap, DJ culture, Avant soundscapes and darkly hewn trip-hop. Strap in!
