Hitting play on his debut album, UK rapper and one of the British Black Music Scene’s elite artists Mercston, releases ‘Top Tier’, accompanied by the visuals from the title track too featuring Devlin and Ghetts.
Nearly two decades in the making, his journey and incredible repertoire to date have all pointed to today’s release as he draws on his unquestionable ability, experience and diverse influence to create the 16-track masterpiece. Featuring previous singles including ‘More Life’, released in early January, plus his collaboration ‘No Banter’ with good friend Wretch 32 last year, the levels for ‘Top Tier’ have been set high from its inception.
A serious body of work which also features the ‘Top Tier’ of UK acts in British Black Music, including Ghetts, Devlin, Blade Brown, Louis Rei (WSTRN) and Giggs as well as productions from the likes of Scholar DJ, Merlin and Rxwntree, the album cuts embody his flow and unorthodox lyrical style.
From the opening kick of ‘Hatrick’, which is the Scholar DJ produced riddim that pays homage to the grime scene, (of which Mercston has played an integral role in constructing), through to anthemic chants and the smash of a hook on ‘More Life’, Top Tier draws on varying genres, vibes and flows that make this an ultimate future classic from one of the UK’s finest emcees. Elements of Jazz flitter across the laidback and soulful ‘Jess’, whilst deeper gritty Rap is served up on ‘Stone Love’ with Giggs and ‘Facts’ with Blade Brown. Garage vibes rain down on ‘Mercs Skinner’, the Caribbean sizzles on ‘Bathrobe’ and the melodic, sing-a-longs are provided by ‘Stay Under Me’ and ‘One and Only’ with Louis Rei. Although the wait has been eagerly anticipated by fans, ‘Top Tier’ brings with it Mercston’s wisdom, influence and maturity which elevates his sound, and talent for writing to new heights.
