Music legend and respected entrepreneur and philanthropist Akon is launching a cryptocurrency brand and plans for a new futuristic city in Africa, so of course these big plans needed a big celebration! On Tuesday evening at the opulent Palihouse in West Hollywood, Akon was joined by celebrity artists and tech geniuses from all over the world for a private red carpet pre-launch event. The event brought out pop-culture, big screen and music stars, Actor Adam Rodriguez, CeeLo Green, Young M.A., Actor Isaiah Washington, Malynda Hale, Mally Mal, Tanika Ray, as well as tech celebrities Ryan Scott, David Washington, Tony DiMatteo, Adrian Scott and Jed McCaleb.

Akon made a name for himself in the music world as the first solo artist to hold both the number one and two spots simultaneously on the Billboard Hot 100 charts twice, in addition to earning Grammy nominations and DOZENS of certified gold and platinum singles. But in addition to his artistry Akon has proven his skills as a businessman, and he was recognized by Forbes years ago as the 4th most powerful celebrity in Africa.

Akon’s charitable efforts to bring electric lighting to 15 countries in Africa in 2014 received much acclaim, but his latest project is on an even bigger scale. Akon is building a technology-infused futuristic city in Senegal, and his new “Akoin” cryptocurrency will be the basis of its economy. As Akon explained during the event, “Ultimately if we want to have progress, we have to build our own...The opportunities are in Africa, the resources and the population. There’s no coin for Africa besides Akoin, and that’s where the benefit is.”
