K.O.D. - "Beep" / www.hiphopondeck.com
The hip-hop ode to the cellphone is fertile territory, located somewhere between A Tribe Called Quest’s Skypager, Makonnen’s flip-phone Nokia, and Rick Ross’s narcotic iPhone. KOD’s entry into this grand tradition is short and sweet, burrowing its self in your head like the notifications coming out of your favorite device/lifeline. He manages to repeat the chorus twice in less than two minutes, an onslaught of melody that rivals the Ramones for efficiency. Expect this song to soundtrack more than one Drake-esque dance party, the universal phone hand-sign swaying along in rhythm. When you’re listening and hear the constant ping of the phone, take it as a notification to grab your own and send “Beep” along to someone else who deserves to get it caught in their head.

About K.O.D.

K.O.D. isn’t going to pick a side. He’ll rap about the trap, all wrapped up in triplets like little baggies. He’ll lie to his mother about the contents of his backpack, telling her about his plans to be doctor or lawyer. Late night, he’ll sing in a pained croon to himself when he realizes the consequences of his actions. Out of Hyde Park, Boston, K.O.D. mixes a little bit of conscious with a little bit of trap. You can hear it in the beats--90’s style saxophone samples drift over dancing hi-hats and mind-altering 808’s or in the way his voice switches between melody and dissonance like Jekyll and Hyde. In the past, people would have said that a rapper like K.O.D. is contradictory. He might be--but that’s because he’s a person. Everybody is a contradiction.
