China’s
best new rap group, Higher Brothers, are overcoming censorship to reach
a global audience with their music video for new single, “Bitch Don’t
Kill My Dab.” This video is the first installment of the “Over The Wall” series,
produced by 88 Rising, which highlights the rap group’s journey to
hip-hop fame and their mission to conquer China’s Great Firewall.
Hailing from the southwestern city of Chengdu in mainland China, Higher Brothers is MaSiWei, Psy.P, DZ and Melo. As featured by The Huffington Post and The New York Times, the group is already accustomed to government backlash following the success of Melo’s singles, “Daddy Ain’t Going To Work Tomorrow,” and “Uber Rap.” In a conservative society where words must be chosen carefully, Higher Brothers stand out for their ability to translate the vibrant youth culture of their city into a much larger movement for free expression.
The “Over The Wall” series and the music video for “Bitch Don’t Kill My Dab” is made possible by 88 Rising, a new media platform and imagination factory dedicated to celebrating global Asian culture. Led by an award-winning team of creative visionaries all over the world, 88 Rising strives to bridge the gap between East and West, spotlighting the richest cultural stories and people from Asia and beyond.
