Complex, Witty, with an uncanny approach is how most would describe Bethlehem, PA Hip Hop MC Maverick Da Ronnin. His latest release, 3 Sides, is as creative as you will find on the indie scene, and ultimately peaked my interest in this up and comer. I got the chance to sit down with him recently to discuss his brand of music and pick his brain about his approach to his contributions to the music game today. Check it out:
Jason Bourne: Maverick Da Roninn is a unique name, any particular significance ?
Maverick Da Ronnin: Maverick by definition means a person that walks his own path. To be honest that is exactly how I feel. I am in my walk of life. Roninn is a samurai who has lost his master or no longer has one which I feel my style of rap is comparable to a sword.
Jason Bourne: Describe to us the Hip Hop scene in Bethlehem:
Maverick Da Roninn: There are a lot of artist here believe it or not; a small amount in my opinion are really into making music and are trying to get somewhere with it while others do it as a hobby.
Jason Bourne: How long have you been recording and performing ?
Maverick Da Roninn: as of now i been doing it for 2 and a half years been loving it ever since
Jason Bourne: Thus far what would u consider the highlight of your grind ?
Maverick Da Roninn: I have so many to be honest but a big one is when I successfully organized a show at a local town bar and gathered artists from the area. It went great
Jason Bourne : Are you signed to any particular management ?
Maverick Da Roninn: No, not at all.
Jason Bourne: How would you describe your brand, and sound ?
Maverick Da Roninn: I would describe me like a catch phrase. #GamerNotAGangster which means I am not trying to be a street dude I'm not trying to rap about a life I have no part of. I only touch on things I know. which is games, comics, anime, and life in general; my trails n tribulations, my thoughts, my dreams, my worries, anything that i know people like me can relate to.
Jason Bourne: Your latest release 3 sides, is very complex, and very Hip Hop; break down the concept for us ?
Maverick Da Roninn: 3 Sides is funny. It is a brief overview of me as a artist and person. T he track has three verses. In each verse I rap about a different aspect of me. First verse is the confident side ,the second is conscious, and the last is a nerd/gamer. Between the verses I introduce the next side coming up. I am confident about the record because I think it speaks to each side of me as a whole. It has an element for everyone, Whether they like cocky bars, concious rhymes or a nerdy dialect anyone can listen.
Jason Bourne: Seems like you are dealing with some form of an alter ego , is that the case ?
Maverick Da Roninn: No; I just have so many styles of rap in me from growing up listening to so many great artists it made me into who I am. I never want to be stuck in a box where people expect me to speak on one topic, that's unrealistic. As a person who works, grinds, and has other interests I would rather rap about it all and give a variety to the people who bless me with their time.
