HipHopOnDeck Exclusive Interview w/ Kissie Lee | @iamKissieLee

Tell me about your background and where did you grow up.

I was born in Germany, my parents met in the army. I grew up in Denver CO, before the ganja was legal tho lolz.

Growing up did you want to pursue a career in music?

Yes I started when I was 6 years old I told my mom I wanted to join this acting company that I went to with my friend. I had to learn a song and recite a monologue that’s how my mom found out I could sing. After that it was history I sang at all the festivals in Denver, my dad is a preacher I would sing before he preached on Sundays and in the choir.

What was the first time music had a big effect on your life.

My mom won tickets on the radio to see Aaliyah and Usher in concert and that was my first concert I fell in love with Aaliyah that day!

How long have you been in the music business and how did you get started?

Professionally it kicked off when I did Making the Band (Danity Kane) season after that I started meeting all the heavy hitters in Atlanta, writing and artistry wise.

What inspires your music?
Life. I go through so much I be surprised how I bounce back from it. From love relationships to money issues to business relationships but I just write about it.  Hanging with my homegirls and going thru their shit with them too inspires some lyrics too.

Which artist are you currently listening to? And is there anyone of these artist that you'd like to collaborate with?

Scotty ATL, The Weekend, and hella oldies, like Marvin Gaye, Teddy Pendergrass, Isley Brothers

Studio work or performing live, which of these do you prefer most and why?

They’re so different! I get a rush from writing a new crazy record it’s like a high! The stage is my number on love though because that’s where I started in theater on the stage and I love engaging with everyone.

Whats the best piece of advice in this business you actually followed so far, and one you didn't follow, but now for sure that you should have.

Do shit yourself. That’s pretty much how you’re guaranteed to get the job. I don’t think there’s any advice that I didn’t follow.

How do you describe your image?

Girly but comfortable.  It’s not straight tomboy but I be chilling tho.  In the studio they call me “the Blonde Bombshell form Denver” lolz. I’m like a Round the Way girl

Can you tell us about any new projects or ideas you will be working on in the future? And do you have any shout-outs?
