Straight out the DMV, 18-year-old emcee Nodis ushers us into the future of hip-hop with his debut mixtape, 22nd Century. This crisp collection of eleven rewind-worthy tracks features Nodis examining the everyday wins and woes of teenage life, from the white picket fences of suburban Virginia to the alleyways of the nation’s capital. It’s a superb concoction of buttery bars, fluid flows, and bouncy, boulder-hard beats, doused in the aroma of an afternoon blunt session.
On his catchy lead single “Yammers,” Nodis spits about the drug-heavy zone he’s immersed in, then brings it even more to life with his peers on "Private School," a posse cut rich in personality. And with these standouts also comes motivational music like the tape’s opener "Rise Up" and downright vicious lyrical performances like “Lion From Sheep”, where Nodis acrobatically raps, “Young sire, born with the fire, uh / torch flame, four names, one's Sidon, uh / cocaine in the sink, gold chain and a mink don’t make you finer.” Then there’s the hypnotic banger “Don’t Sell It”, which encourages his followers to “go ahead and give your mind a makeover” through a slew of dexterous rhymes set to arguably the illest track on the whole project. Consider this mixtape a dilated portal into the new-school American teenage experience, ambitiously presented to ignite, generate, and awaken the next generation.
