As a result of COVID-19, critical summer programs that ensure the safety and well-being of poor Black and Brown youth have been canceled. This is systematic violence; it is a recipe for increased violence this summer and needless trauma. In order to raise funds to support 1,000+ youth this summer and continue the work happening at the Crisis Management System Sites across NYC and satellite programs in other cities, Erica Ford is leading a 24-hour live fundraiser on June 3rd to kick off Gun Violence Awareness Month.
“We’re all traumatized. First COVID-19 devastated Black & Brown families with the death of so many matriarchs and patriarchs: the heads of households, the pillars in our communities. Followed by the cancellation of crucial funding for Summer Youth Employment - a lifeline for young people. Then George Floyd’s cold blooded murder: ‘I can’t breathe.’ Breonna Taylor. Dominique Clayton. Atatiana Jefferson. Ahmaud Aubrey,” said Erica Ford, LIFE Camp CEO & Co-Founder of the New York City Crisis Management System.
“We’re calling on the world to lead with love. We need to end racism. It’s too much. We can’t breathe. Our young people are hurt. We are traumatized. We need structural change. And we need to heal.”
